Coralline altar: Saya de Malha by artists Elise Rigot and Emmanuel Boyadjian
Coralline altar: Saya de Malha by artists Elise Rigot and Emmanuel Boyadjian
This micro-architecture is a small altar dedicated to coralline algae. This object of mediation and dialogue invites you to bring to life in our mouths these ocean dwellers, which look like pebbles but are actually encrusting algae.
Are you familiar with coralline algae?
You can only take care of what you know and care about. These common yet little-known algae populate the Saya de Malha bank, a plateau covered with an underwater herbarium which was the subject of the “Indian Ocean” mission led in 2022 by Les Explorations de Monaco. Each of these objects highlights a particular property of coralline: its ability to aggregate species as a world-pebble, its very ancient geological time scale, the place where it was discovered: Saya de Malha, its hard, pink materiality due to the photosynthetic reaction of its pigments.

Watercolor by artist Rémi Leroy: Ceci n'est pas un crabe!
Watercolor based on sketches by the artist, Rémy Leroy, aboard the S.A. Agulhas II, during the maritime exploration “Mission Océan Indien 2022”, led by Explorations de Monaco.
This is not a crab!
And yet there it is, right in front of you. Perhaps one day, plunging your gaze into the ocean, exploring the mystery that emerges from it, between surface and abyss, visible and invisible, you'll let yourself go to this living, silent encounter. Sometimes, the imagination, humble and inexhaustible, creator of a small spark, can change the way we look at the depths of the world”.
